Choosing the right TPI

  • 2–4 TPI — Large solid billet and heavy sections of tough alloys
  • 4–8 TPI — General metal cutting on hard material — solid bar and plate
  • 6/10 variable pitch — Tube and mixed sections in difficult alloys
  • 10–14+ TPI — Thin wall sections, sheet and precision cuts on exotic materials

M51 vs M42 — when to upgrade

  • M42 first — Suitable for the vast majority of mild steel and stainless cutting
  • Upgrade to M51 — When M42 wears out quickly — hardened steel, titanium, Inconel
  • Production environments — M51 blade life typically justifies the higher cost per blade
